It was 2 years ago last weekend that our Miss Montrose dragged her back right paw while playing fetch on the concrete pad where our trailer usually sits beside the house, and the top of her paw started to bleed. We had come into town from camp to do the watering , so we phoned the Vet's & and she had an appt asap. We saw a standin as ours was on holidays.
He wanted the coller on her, so I said ok, but really, I don't think that she needed it. When we went back for the second appt a week later and saw one of our own Vets, he mentioned Degenerative Myelopathy.
I started to read about DM, and after a period of denial, well the rest is history.
One full year for her right back leg to go down, almost this full second year for the left one to fail her. Her right front is now weak, and she doesn't want her cart, too much effort for so little movement so she prefers to scoot.
Whatever makes her happy, and happy she is! No pain, the one blessing of this is disease. Her Dad & I are her back legs for her now, and other than her food and rolling on the cool grass her favourite thing is her stroller. Not many a 7.30 am walkies are missed my this foursome!
Here is our girl the day that the top of her paw bled.

Oh Barbara.... that is heartbreaking. But I'm so glad you can look at the positives of she's not in any pain.
One other thing, she has dedicated and loving parents. +WUBCLUB+ She's blessed to have such wonderful care in you two. It will be an honor to someday meet the 4 of you.

She is so very beautiful, and always seems to be absolutely beaming in her photos. You can CLEARLY see a dog that is not only happy, but one that is paying you back for the extra effort that you and your husband have to spend on her. She thanks you with that smile. And you will be paying her back with our book. MISS MONTROSE is going to make a lot of people smile!

Wouldn't you just give anything to have her back like she was even in that picture of her, Barbara? What a sweetheart she is and I know it hurts to the bone to see her this way. It's a blessing she's not in any kind of pain and wtih the aid of the stroller she can "ride" again and see sights that she wouldn't under the care of many others out there who wouldn't have gone this far taking care of her. Blessings from on high for this effort.

I am proud to call Miss Montrose a personal friend. I've never met her in person, but when Barbara and I web cam, she hears my voice and scoots over and I talk to her. She knows me now. Before I knew her, I created the Cool To Be Corgi Calendar and she honoured her in it for her courage and spirit.
I think Barbara and her husband have done a wonderful thing giving Monty every opportunity to live her life to the fullest and happiest given the disability she has.
My hat goes off to you both, Barbara - I'm proud to call you a friend too!

Monty has an irrepressible spirit, always a big corgi smile on her face! She is lucky to have such devoted parents. And I'm sure you feel lucky to have such a wonderful dog. I wish I had half as much spirit as she does.

She was such a trooper in her cart, sad to hear her front is weak now. Glad she isn't in pain and heck we all don't want a lot of work for little results as we get older! I thought of a skateboard instead requiring one paw, but with Miss Montrose riding in a stroller fine, no need to find alternatives. Pepper wouldn't ride in a stroller when she was lame - she had to produce any movement. Glad Miss Montrose is wiser and still loves life.

Sweet Monty! I'm so glad she's not in pain and that she enjoys her stroller, Barbara. She is lucky to have you two. +WUBCLUB+
May she enjoy many, many more stroller rides. :CUTE:

That Monty is a lucky, lucky girl... we humans could use some Corgi inspiration. Thank goodness our good friend Delta is on top of that ;)

You have done what few people would have done. You have given Montri\ose her dignity, her freedom to move about as she wishes and provided her with a loving, caring environment. I can only imagine the courage it takes everyday to continue to smile through your efforts to keep all that true. I know that Montrose's ever present Corgi smile makes it all worth while. I hope that the support & kinship of the C2BC family help in that too.

I posted a reply yesterday during our thunderstorm and apparently it got lost! I'm so sad for your Miss Monty and for you. I know you want her to be on all fours and running around again. Just know that she loves you for everything you do for her. All of you will be in my prayers. Like all the others here, I'm glad she isn't in any pain.

It really amazes me how resilient these little dogs can be and what enormous hearts they have.
Her disability is a very serious one but I am most thankful that pain isn't a real part of it.
I hope I never have to face that decision with my two but if I do, Barbara - you and Monty are great role models.

Thank you Susan, it does my heart good when we meet someone new and Montrose and I can show people that disabled dogs are no more thow away then are people. They still can live a full and happy life of good quality. Last night it was a boy of about 13 that we met on our walk, he was fascinated with her stroller & wanted to know all about DM.

And because of you Barbara, that kid will remember your conversation, and if he owns a dog as an adult, he will be a much better dog owner. That should make you, and Miss Montrose, very happy.

Amen, MGM!! It's like that television commercial where the people witness someone else performing a small act of kindness, and they in turn perform one for someone else, until it comes back to the first person. Hooray for Monty and Barbara!
