View Full Version : The saga of sweet Sadie continues....

Well, there's a new issue with Sadie! She had a day of running and playing Monday between rainstorms, and then it cleared off enough Monday evening for a long walk. She fell asleep on the cool tile as soon as we came in, and then when she got up an hour or so later she wouldn't put any weight on her right rear leg! She let us manipulate it without complaint...no broken toe nail, no cuts in the pad, no stickers. She does seem more protective of her foot than anything, but it's hard to tell.

I called the vet yesterday and he thinks she has a sprain. She's supposed to stay quiet - no running or stair-climbing (right...a corgi with no running?!?) So she's spent more time than usual in her crate and on her leash. This morning it was very, very stiff or sore - she would put no weight at all on it when she first got up, but as she has walked around a bit she seems ever so much better.

Of course, today is a holiday so no vet visit today. He doesn't want her on any meds like baby asprin because of her surgery tomorrow. They will check her out completely tomorrow while she is groggy and see what they can find.

My poor sweet Sadie!! I just hate this!

But...Happy Fourth everyone!

Ah, Leslie, poor Sadie,

It probably is just a pull or a sprain and rest is the very best thing for it. I have found with mine that after they get up from a period of rest or sleep they will be more stiff and they eventually work it out after moving about for a while. Keep her resting as best you can.

Happy 4th to all of our American friends!

Miss Gambler had a few days(over a year ago) that she began favoring her back legs, and I already had the vet appointment and was thinking the worse, until I just happened to get a good view of her coming out of the crate and realized that she was banging both of her knees on that middle metal bar as she jumped out. I keep the bar covered now, and spent a lot of time training her to come out of the crate "easy" and she hasn't limped since. Here's hoping that it's something as simple as that with Sadie, keep us posted.

Poor Sadie. Sending good healing vibes for her leg and her surgery.

As always, my imagination is running away with me. Is it possible to have hip dysplasia in one hip? Would she be holding her foot off the ground at times with dysplasia? And can it have an "acute" onset like this?

She truly seems to be favoring her foot, not her hip...but I can always jump to the difficult answer.

Leslie

This afternoon my husband got a good look between Sadie's toes...there seems to be a small cut or irritation there, so I'm thinking that it really is her foot not her leg or hip. Our vet can take a good look tomorrow while she's asleep - if she's got anything in there we can get it out easily that way.

Lots of vibes for Miss Sadie tomorrow - she'll need them! (And so will I!!)

Leslie: I do the same thing - let my imagination think the worst.

She will be in very good hands soon so try to be calm. It is hard to see them in pain but her Vets will give her a thorough exam when she goes in for her surgery.

I hope Sadie has a good and relazing day before her Vet visit.

Yes, it is possible to have it in only one hip.

Would she be holding her foot off the ground at times with dysplasia? And can it have an "acute" onset like this?

Maybe, maybe not. And yes. If you really want to know if she's dysplastic have the vet do a hip x ray while she's out and send it to OFA. Do not take your vet's opinion, as most vets cannot correctly read a corgi hip x ray unless they have seen many, many of them. Corgi hips look dysplastic to most vets. Send them to OFA for an offical reading and certification.

Might also be her ACL. (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) Have the vet check that out too.

And yes, that's probably it. Try running clear water over the foot and see if that helps. And put a bit of neosporin on it. Meantime continue the crate rest, and walking on leash for potty breaks.

Leslie:

Sadie and you have our very best hopes and strongest posible vibes for a good report tomorrow. Try to stay calm and be positive. Its not only the best thing you can do for you, it is also the best thing you can do for Sadie.

Please let us know when the surgery is over and what the vet says about Sadie's limp.

I hope Sadie will be as good as new soon, Leslie. Those babies can worry you but, she'll be fine. Keep an update here tomorrow as to how she's doing.

Thanks everyone! Sadie seems to be feeling much better tonight, even putting some weight on her foot. I'll feel better when she's been checked out thoroughly tomorrow at the vet. And since she'll be asleep already, she'll never know what hit her!

To say thanks for all of your concern, here's a picture from this evening of Sadie on "rug rest"...a girl and her toys!

She does have such a sweet look on her face. We'll be thinking of her, and sending tons of good vibes her way. And it does sound like it may indeed be something simple, like a splinter or something, so I'm happy to hear that. Keep us posted on all details.

I somehow missed this yesterday, so sorry. Glad she is feeling a bit better , the fact that she has some irritation between her toe pads might be why she is not putting weight on the foot. I am sure that she will be in great hands today at the vets and they can take a peek at it...

I also go to the worst case scenario, I blame my mother for that, when i was little if i got a small paper cut she would tell me to wash it out well, after all I didnt want to get gangrene in it and have the whole finger amputated , right? sigh...

Keeping Sadie in my thoughts today as she goes to the vets for her surgery...

I just got back from dropping her off at the vet's. They are going to check out her foot/leg issue as well today. She was walking much more normally this morning so I'm feeling much better about that.

I'll let you know as soon as the Drama Queen's surgery is finished! :CUTE:

After she heals from this surgery, which will be quickly I am sure, she will feel so young, not having to worry about puppies and all, so you better get ready, Sadie is going into a second puppyhood, lol. Thinking of you guys and sending lots of healing vibes today.

Just a friendly reminder about tomorrow's Foto Friday - Oops Shots - a photo that wasn't the one you were meaning to get, but is funny or cute anyways! Like extreme nostril close-ups - I seem to have a few of those!!

I have some great nostril shots, but on purpose, I have tried so hard to copy THE DOG shots, I love those photos, so I have quite a few of the nostrils. Can I claim they were taken by accident? They really are good.

Sadie's surgery was successful and she is resting in recovery! I can pick her up after 4:30 this afternoon. I haven't talked to the vet yet, but the tech called to tell me that he had found a suspicious lump, excised it, and found an impacted milk duct - nothing of any long term concern and now eliminated.

I'll get the full report from the vet when I pick her up later this afternoon - complete with her Elizabethan collar! She's going to be quite the fashion plate for a few days.

So happy to hear that Sadie came through fine - I'm sure she'll look charming in her "collar".

LoveMySadie
07-05-2007, 04:53 PM
We're home, and there's no collar! They watched her all day and she did not try to chew her incisions. He said unless she began to worry with them, we wouldn't need the collar - and she would be much happier without it.

He found nothing at all wrong with her hip or leg - some redness between two toes that probably is the result of something sharp on our walk. We're going to watch her a bit more, but she's already walking much better so I think we're in the clear on that one too.

Now, if we could just get this shedding to stop!

Thanks so much again for checking in on Sadie - she's home safe and sound!

so very happy to hear that sadie is doing well after her surgery and i am also glad that the limp is better and that it looks like it was just something that poked her between her toes.. I am sure she will continue to heal up quickly and be back to her old self in no time!

 Post whelping and now having been under anesthesia for the spay, she's just getting started. Lots of fur tumbleweeds to come, just have to ride it out.

Glad to hear she's home, doing okay and it was apparently only a boo boo causing her limping. I rarely have to use the e-collars with any of the foster's speuters. Every now and then I'll have an exception, but usually they do just fine.

YIKES!! I thought that the spaying was supposed to relieve the shedding, not enhance it! All I can say is thank goodness Sadie is the sweetest, cutest, funniest dog I've ever had...because she is certainly the shedding-est! (And you know how serious it must be for an English teacher to resort to "shedding-est"!)
