Yesterday I took Milo to a park, he met his Bichon Frise friend there. We had a nice walk and went to Rita's for an ice. They gave him a tiny cup of vanilla ice with a milkbone in it. Cute. Milo LOOOOOOVEEES that.

Later in the evening he had diarreha 2 times and urped on the carpet. This am he still had diarreha. After work he only piddled. Otherwise he seems fine. Do you think it was the vanilla ice? Seems unlikely, it was a tablespoon size portion. I am pretty dilligent about not letting him pick up anything to eat while we are out...but that doesn't mean he didn't find something while I wasn't looking.

Any advice? Thank you!

Oh yeah - it was probably the vanilla ice cream - I've had the same problem with all three of mine at one point or another. Now when I go get a special treat, they get frozen blueberry yogurt and only a little each.

Don't give him anything meds wise, er. let it pass - it's the best way.

Yogurt of course is a good thing, but try sorbet, nothing to bother their tummy. Miss Gambler, and Mojo, have always like it, and the Italian Ice's that are making the mainstream now, gelatos. All better than ice-cream. Miss Gambler loves ice-cream, but she gets an upset tummy every time she has it, which is RARE.

Unless you make it yourself, you are never 100% sure of what was put in it- Ice cream and most gelatos are too rich for my two. Sorbet seems to be ok for them without tummy upsets but there is a TON of sugar in them so i don't give that either... Both of mine get a frozen treat of low fat plain organic yogurt mixed with unsweetened natural peanut butter and just a wee tiny bit of honey and all gets mixed ( i made a batch using 1 cup yogurt, 1 tbsp peanutbutter and maybe 2 teaspoons of honey or less even... blended it up and put it in tiny plastic cups with lids-( like you get at some fast food restaurants to put ketchup or mayo in) . I never give them more than about a tablespoon of it at a time... I hold one per dog and let them lick for a few minutes and then the treat goes away... to be pulled out of the freezer another day.

I hope that Milo feels better really quickly, and i am sure it will pass... you might add pumpkin to his food to help....firm things up.

I have to remember that - what a great idea!

I cannot take credit for that frozen yogurt, that was told to me by both Jessica ( fluffypants) and Linda ( corgimom). I am not sure if either of them add honey, i did becuase the peanutbutter is unsweetened, and it tasted better with the honey ( yes, i DID taste it.. not bad, if you like peanutbutter flavored yogurt LOL!!!)

I probably would love it! Peanut butter ice cream is my favorite! Which is why I don't buy it anymore!

Well you all have inspired me - I made up some frozen Kongs this morning and threw some peanut butter into the yogurt mix. It helped that I just stirred up a new jar of PB and got it all over the place so I had to do something with it - didn't want to waste it on paper towels in the garbage can. I let the dogs lick the spoon and bowl. Smiles, everyone!:BIGGRIN"

This was Jessicas recipe with the yogurt/peanut butter and honey. I have added different things to the yogurt and put them in a kong. Even pumpkin and yogurt together(remember, what may not be so appetizing to us, is yummy to dogs)

One way I often use up overly ripened bananas that no one in my house will eat is to mash them up and add them to yogurt and put the mixture in a kong to freeze - Cody loves these. You can also use the small yogurt cups for this

Jackie is a big fan of both the pumpkin and the peanut butter flavors. I will post the recipe in the recipe thread (assuming recipes includes both canine and human - if not, I am more than happy for our Moderator Extraordinaire to move it!). :CUTE:

It's quite possible it is. Dariy products can give dogs diarrhea. Half an immodium shoud stop it. And today feed a bland diet. (Rice and chicken broth for instance.)

Liam had the same thing. He played with his little girlfriend for a couple of hours and both got a fresh beef bone and my son swears a LITTLE brisket fat (okay it was Memorial Day in TEXAS) and his tummy did not do well. Seems corgi stomachs are nothing like Golden's stomachs - they can eat anything and never have an issue. Liam is much better now with no treatment except plain dog food. Hope Milo is feeling better!

Depends on the dog. I have both kinds, those that can eat darn near anything and be just fine and those where one change can cause an upset.

Lori,

How is Milo's tummy today?

Debi and everyone:

Thanks for the sage advice and concern. Milo had a some more diarreaha the next morning and must have gotten it out of his system because he was fine by evening. He was all pooped out....but had normal stools from then on.
I fed him boiled white rice with some chicken in it for a day and he is fine.
I do keep children's Immodium on hand but when I went to give it to him, I noticed it....it had expired 2 years ago! So, a fresh bottle is on my shopping list.

This is the second time that Imodium has been mentioned on this site, so is the children's strength something that is commonly given to dogs? I know that Miss Gambler has a very sensitive tummy so I would love to know more about this. I always have Imodium pills on hand, (the adult strength) but I know how strong they are, they can actually knock me out.

You don't need children's strength. Use adult strength. Start with half a caplet and give another half if needed. If you need more than that call your vet first.

Thanks for responding, and I'm amazed because of it's strength.

I understand that some medicines made for children are more concentrated as they're given by weight. Best to use the adult strength unless advised otherwise by your vet.
