Joey's new Mom came Saturday morning to take Joey home with her to his forever home.
It has been a true pleasure to be his foster mom. I am so proud of him and how far he's come. When he came to live with us he could barely cross the room. He weighed 58 lbs and was slow, constantly winded and breathing hard. But he always had a beautiful smile and a look in his eyes that made me understand there was a Corgi inside and just dying to get out.
He walked with me, put up with all the noise and antics of my two heathens, got fed a lot less than he was used to and even found things like green beans, broccoli, and cauliflower in his dish and got used to them. He rarely got treats but he was always upbeat.
I remember the first few weeks when he would be so tired he didn't want to go out for last pee of the night. He tolerated me putting his leash on and forcing him outside. But the weight started coming off, his breathing got much better, he started trotting and as of the last few weeks, actually running. When he runs his right ear flops in the breeze.
Joey made many friends. The people at the dog park all cheered him on and gave him lots of love. And my Dog Walker became his best buddy and personal trainer.
Kathy put him in his new car, I gave him a hug and told him to take good care of his new Mom. And he did what several people who have fostered have shared: he turned to me a gave me a big smile.
I took Tuck and Lu to the dog park this morning and at least 5 different times I turned around and started to look for Joey who was always "working the crowd" at the park and trying to keep up with me.
I know Joey is in great hands and I can't wait to see him in a few months after he has adjusted to his new home and life. I know he will do great.

OMG!!!! I'm so happy for Joey and Kathy!!! A perfect match - I have been worrying and wondering if things would work out!
Susan - you did a wonderful thing for him and I'm sure he will never forget you. I'm so glad I got to meet him - he is such a gentle soul and wants nothing but love (and a few treats ) and to give it in return.
It must be bittersweet for you, but what a great reward knowing he is off to his forever home fitter and healthier than when he came to you.
I hope we will hear from Kathy and get to know how he does.
Congrats to you and to Jim, his personal trainer for helping him out! +UROCK+

Well done Susan, well done! Bittersweet does describe the feeling - a piece of your heart goes with them, but there is also the excitement of the new life they will have. Will look forward to hearing how he charms his new owner. +WUBCLUB+

Congratulations to Joey for finding his forever home, and for Susan, his foster mom angel. +ANGPRAY+ I know he will never forget you or all you did for him...will he be living in the area still? Any chance we might see an even more chipper and svelte Joey next June in Hibernia Park?

I don't have much to add to this thread, Susan. I know I couldn't be as unselfish as you have been and give up Joey after bringing him so far. Are you going to be fostering again? My memory is poor, have you done this before?
Thanks for sharing this adventure. We are here for the joys and the sorrows, but I eat up all the success stories.
Is there any strings attached to his new owner's diligance with keeping the weight off Joey? And I too want to know what his final weight was when he left. June

Joey was 46 lbs at his last weigh in almost 2 weeks ago. And each day of the last 2 weeks he has been more and more active.
Here's his first report from his new Mom:
Thanks, Susan for everything. Joey is doing great. I think we have bonded already You are right --- he is very sweet. We took a long walk today at my vegetable garden and he actually was running for a while. I think he liked it. There is an arboretum and a steam there. And he met lots of my friends today -- everyone wants to meet him.
Thanks, again. I will take good care of him.

Aw, Susan, while I'm happy for Joey, I'm a little sniffy for you too - I know you will miss him. I thought he was going to Kathy's this coming weekend, not this one just passed. You did great, great things for him - from the time I dropped him off until I saw him again a couple of weeks ago, he was just a changed boy! His energy level was so much better and he looked great with loosing that much weight. I know he wormed his way into your heart - just like he did mine in only three days. He's so much better off than he was three months ago, that's for sure. A big standing ovation for all you did for him (and to Jim, the personal trainer too).
Do Tucker and Lulu miss him as much as you do? Perhaps we could interest them in another foster corgi, LOL. +CLAPPING+
Hopefully we'll see him at the Philly Area Corgi Picnic next June.
Best,
Diane

You did a great job, with Joey! I know you must miss him terribly, but you have the comfort of knowing that you were the one who got him on a more healthy track and made it possible for him to have a new wonderful home where he will be loved alot! Congratulations for the wonderful job! I'm really going miss hearing about Joey!

It must have been hard to see him go, but rewarding too. Susan is certainly stronger than I would be, as I probably wouldn't have been able to let him go after 10 or 15 minutes! lol Joey will do well, no doubt.
