View Full Version : Eye boogers - what's normal?
Several times a day I wipe off very thin, white eye boogers from Link's face. They're not goopy or gross, just white thread-like things. What's normal as far as eye boogers? Should there be none or very little, some, a lot? Does it vary with age? Millie doesn't seem to have as many as Link, but I don't remember anything remarkable from her eyes as a puppy. I'm really just wondering about allergies, since he has the ear thing going on right now too. I've never had to deal with dog allergies before.

I'm not sure what's normal, I find with mine sometimes they have more eye gunk than others. Rupe had the looks of some kind of infection the other morning, but it was gone by evening. Unless it's really discoloured or thick (lovely discussion ) I wouldn't worry or do anything to his eyes. At the most sometimes I'll take a baby face cloth that's wet from a soaking in warm water and baking soda and give them a wipe down.

I wipe pretty thick eye boogers (usually a brownish-whitish color - right, Deb: lovely subject!) from both Rhys and Andy in the morning. Then, Rhys usually gets some small brownish ones over the course of a day. Our vet doesn't think it's abnormal.

If all of a sudden there is an increase in eye goobers then I see if I have changed laundry soap, I review where the dog has been outside and determine how that environment has changed...ie: weeds have seeded, or there is pine pollen. Pepper only had one eye that would do the goober throughout her life and that one let me know about the weeds. So on her alone there was difference between her two eyes. One had morning goober the other had nothing.

I am not sure exactly how much is considered normal. Cody gets some eye buggers during the day, but it is not to the point where I have to wipe his eyes several times a day. I have a cat that gets eye buggers and he has some terrible allergies to lots of stuff. I had both Cody and my cat tested for allergies a few months ago due to symptoms that they had and believe it or not Cody is allergic to human dander and also somewhat to cat dander, but also a few outdoor allergens as well.
I know things are starting to bloom in MI as they are here in WI and the pollen count is high by us; it may not be anything with Link - I can't remember what you are feeding him - you may want to try a change of food to something with a single source protein and without any corn or wheat - but maybe you are doing that already.

Jackie has eye boogers like that every day too. I have asked the vet (repeatedly :CUTE: ) about it, and he said it's nothing to worry about. Doesn't stop me from asking though!

Monty's eyes need to be wiped almost everyday, moreso than Dylan. But it depends on how much time they spend outside. When you think about it, their faces are less than a foot off the floor or ground, so they are bound to get a certain amount of stuff in their eyes.
Monty's gunk turned green once. Off to the Vet, I knew that was an infection. So now I have some drops on hand, as it has happened more than once. But she was born with a small clogged tear duct, that is why it sometimes flares up.

Just love the words 'eye boogers' never heard that here.
Cindy has more than Sooty who only occasionally need his eyes wiped. Cindy often has brown lines if I forget to wipe them daily.

Oh, this is a nice thread! (hehe) :BIGGRIN"
I have to wipe black eye boggers out of Trevor's eyes every morning.
Doesn't seem abnormal.
Ok, so I see I'm probably worrying about nothing, as usual! I swear if I don't have a new thing to worry about every day I make one up.
Corgimom, yes the pollen is very high here. It's also been very warm so it's hard to keep the windows closed to keep it all out. Everyone else opens the windows, I go behind and close them. A constant battle. I feed him Canidae All Life Stages. it really seems to agree with him, he smells alot better than when he was on the same food the breeder used (Eukanuba puppy).

Oh boy...lovely stuff to talk about. Couldn't help reading through it becos:
1) I have to wipe Benny's eyes too at least once a day. Sometimes they crust at the front corner of this eye into a brownish thing. Ew. haha.
2) The words used are funny: BOOGER, GOOBER, BUGGER, BOOGERY...
Right...eye mucus isn't it? I always thought boogers were the stuff that kids dig out from their nostril, but i digress.

Ok, it's kind of a southernism (southern US origination) "eye boogers". I was concerned about Delilah for the last day or so because she has suddenly started getting larger "eye boogers". In children, it was called this because it usually was brought on more proliferant when the child had a bad cold. I have had a bad cold for the last week and was concerned that Delilah might have caught a bit of it, because of her eyes. No runny nose or coughing - do dogs get colds? I don't remember ever having one with a cold. Then again - this is my first corgi, first dog that loves water, first dog (since I was five) that had the energy she has.

Tucker has had numerous problems with eye gook, or schmutz and I tell him!
Besides the seasonal irritants, he get in trouble because of the dirt blowing around. Think about how low to the ground they are. As we walk, the dirt and worst of all, salt left over from the winter, blows in his eyes.
He has had lots of problems with it and 3 vet trips over the last 2 years.
I NEVER thought of food allergies until reading a thread on one of these sites. I have to admit, switching to the fish based food as opposed to chicken made a difference. Also, now that he is eating Fromm Chicken Formula, I see less irritation.
That's my $.02!
Oh... Lulu has black stuff in the conrer of her eyes and it's always dirt. She is just an active girl who loves getting into dirty places and digging!
