Shhhh.... don't tell Colby, but he is getting "tutored" tomorrow! I'm sure he'll be fine, but knowing how awesome the vibes here are at C2bC, I would request just a minimal bit for the pupster. I'm a little nervous, but we have a great vet, so I know he'll be okay. Right?

Vibes to Colby from Mac and me!! (Can Mac have the earmuffs after Coby is done? We've been avoiding the "n" word in our house...only two weeks until it's Mac's turn ;) )

And yeah, I guess Colin sends vibes too...but not really...he'd prefer not to venture into "manhood" related territory

Thanks guys!

I wasn't nervous in the LEAST... until last night. 6pm, my vet hadn't called to "confirm" the appt. So I called quickly and made sure, no food/minimal water after 8pm, cut off all fluids at 12am, bring him in before 7am.

So I have to fill out all the paperwork for Colby this morning, the "please resuscitate", yes do everything you can to the ends of the earth stuff.... and I read "Breed: Cardigan Welsh Corgi"!!!!!

All these little things and I'm SOOOO nervous.

Just called the VCA Hospital and he hasn't gone in for surgery yet. I guess the vet has a full day and Colby is slated for this afternoon?

*deep sigh* *worry* I know he'll be fine, but I hate waiting. The tech did say she's been going back there and giving Colby a lot of attention, and she said he was the sweetest snuggler of the dogs they've had in lately.

Thank you for all the vibes and well-wishes. Colby and I appreciate them. I'll keep you updated as soon as I hear anything.

Colby update today:

He finally went out to pee and poo at 12am last night. (I carried him to the lawn and back) And then back to bed until 9am this morning. He is still pretty groggy, lethargic and not wanting to do anything other than lay down.

His collar is off as he's leaving his stitches alone (unless I have to leave him alone, then it goes back on) and he's had a small lick of ice cube water (I gave him 2 ice cubes to lick at this morning) and 1 small Tablespoon of food that he's so far kept down, but he's just not really interested in his food like usual.

So the Vet Tech called this morning to check in on Colby, and when I told her he was STILL lethargic and not too responsive, she laughed and said that "boys will milk it, female dogs are tougher". Ummm... had male dogs and cats my whole life and never had a dog this lethargic 12+ hours after surgery. She said she'd talk to the vet and call me back.

I'm not giving him his pain meds yet, until I'm sure he'll keep his food and water down. And when he still seems so medicated, I just don't want to give him more.

I know he'll be fine. But I'm a worry-wart and something feels off. Wondering if he just got too much anesthetic. His stitches look fine, aren't inflamed and he IS drinking and using the potty.

I'll keep you guys updated!

Don't worry too much at this stage - but I will tell you that Rhys's neuter was performed at about 4 in the afternoon, I picked him up around 6 or 630 (and he was very groggy). But by the next morning, he was feeling ok. He slept really well that night, but seemed mostly back to normal after about 12 hours.

And this is my little drama queen, might I add!

MrsGrace
10-03-2007, 01:23 PM
Thanks Tana! Vet said he would be fine too, that he probably got just a bit more anesthetic than he needed. I'm enjoying the extra snuggle time a lot and trying not to let him mope too much!

Going to look in to getting one of those soft e-collars. Seems a lot nicer for all involved than the cone! (though, hopefully I'll never have to use it!)

I just talked to my mom (who worked for a vet for 21 years). She also says not to worry at this point...she said recovery time depends on how much/which kind of anesthesia given. My mom said his ability to potty is a good sign. :CUTE:

Can we try to locate it? :)Yes, it is the one I say has foam inside. Do compare it to the one that inflates to see which your dog might want. I don't think the foam would fit inside Chester's crate and people complained their dog would slip out the foam one. If your dog is like Chester where there is nothing he can get his head out of, then no problem!:TWITCHY:

Glad the bowels are working fine for Colby - just like humans, they want to be sure everything is in order after surgery. If my foggy memory is correct, Pepper was laying around the next morning after until the afternoon/evening.

Do they really need the collars? Link didn't have one, and they didn't mention him needing one either. In the 10 days he had his stitches in I think I caught him licking himself there only 2 or 3 times, which is probably pretty normal anyway for that time period. No biting or anything. Millie didn't have one either back when she was done.

Chester was chewing until blood on his hind when we got him - nerves we concluded as the skin sample showed nothing. So I won't be taking any chances. Pepper had no problem leaving her stitches, we didn't have to consider a collar.

With all the dogs I have had in my life, I have never had to use a collar on one after a spay or neuter operation. Only dog I ever had problems with was a female cocker spaniel and she had popped a couple of stitches. Doc said she was okay when the panicky Mom brought her in. LOL

The long and short of the Vet story... it's a multi-vet clinic and the techs seem to have high turnover. I moved here last November and went to them on the recommendation of family who live locally.

The last few times I've been in, the techs have been in the reception area on the phone making personal calls and ignoring the clients waiting, while the one receptionist looks frazzled and over worked is trying to handle emergency calls plus the waiting clients/animals.

I have had TWO sets of discharge papers that had the wrong animals name on the form, wrong/improper instructions for the procedure done/issue.

Then when I went to pick up Colby, he had been out of surgery barely 2 hours and it took them forever to bring him up, which I find out is due to the fact that they were trying to get him to walk up to the front from the back area (which is a LONG couple of hallways off). That was the last straw for me. Colby had just had major invasive surgery (he had one of his guys up in his body and it took a bit of exploratory to find) and they were trying to make him walk to the front. Literally, I took him from the tech and he slumped against my shoulder, totally zoned out.

The tech didn't and couldn't tell me anything about the procedure. Not how it went, how long it took, how Colby did... nothing. Discharge instructions were blatantly wrong, his breed was still listed incorrectly (and I gave them his puppy AKC paperwork on day 1). The phone call the next day from the tech where she laughed and made light of the fact that Colby was still groggy and while he was peeing, he wasn't really eating or drinking and as she called it, "boys will milk it, female dogs are tougher". I felt it inappropriate. Better and more professional would have been "he must have had an anesthetic that made him groggier. As long as he is peeing and (insert more instructional and helpful advice here) he will be okay, but PLEASE feel free to call us if you have any questions or concerns".

Very unprofessional. And they are supposed to be nationally accredited and sponsored. So I am in the process of finding a new vet and writing a letter to their Corporate Headquarters that I will be CC'ing to the local clinic as well and any one else that will listen.

It's hard because I really like his Vet Dr., but my animals deserve better than this blatant lack of compassion, care and concern from the techs.

That's the story! It'll work out for the best. I know I'll find a new vet locally that I adore. I may just get a list of them and drive around with Colby one day, check out a bunch of clinics and see how the staff is, how clean the facility is etc.

Colby update for tonight...

I have to keep him in the XPen or he fraps everywhere and goes bonkers with his toys! It's awesome to see him so perky again! He delighted in eating a normal meal, had a blast on a very very short "walk" (just in the yard, short leash) and wanted to go after the cats again today, which is a GREAT sign! The past 2 days he hadn't had ANY interest in the cats and let them come up to him and rub. It was really sweet.

So he's awesome and bouncing back quickly. Hard to keep him quiet, but I am putting his meals in small portions in these Kong like balls for him to work at and keep him occupied. Plus some plushy toys.

I had forgotten, I'd bought 2 new BoBo's for Colby, but they were pink and lavender. (HEY! They were on sale and the last two!!! Can't pass up a sale price!!) But as someone pointed out, I could have had better timing in giving him his new pink Bobo!!!:TWITCHY:

I know what you mean Anna, I have had many isssues with techs, even before the dogs, I've had cats my entire life. My policy for years has been to not even waste my time explaining my issues to the techs when I have to call. When I have to call, I ask for the vet by name, if they are busy, I ask to have them call me as soon as they can. It works. If you like your vet, stick with him, just alert the vet, and corporate, about the tech's bad behavior, because that's something that can be corrected. (I've had a tech fired, I had taken two cats in, one for vaccinations, one for an eye irritation, the tech gave the wrong cat the vaccinations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) They were fired that day. Bypass the techs if you like your vet, complain about the items that you listed, and they do deserve the complaints, and never let the techs take them from you for vaccinations and such, always go with them, and ask, ask before they do any and everything. Hang in there Anna, you have many more vet visits ahead of you, all routine of course.

MrsGrace
10-04-2007, 09:47 PM
You're absolutely right, Delta. I'm still going to gauge the reaction of my Vet by her response to my call and official letter. (I'm giving the issue a few days so it's less of a reaction and more of a response on my behalf) If she does something to correct the issues I have had (and others I'm sure) I will be inclined to stay. She really is great and listens. But if she acts like it's somehow my fault, or my problem alone, I am happy to take my animals (and money!) elsewhere.

I have to ask... Was your cat okay??? I would have been furious!

Cat is fine, she's 11 years old now. (I have found that the ones named Lucifer have long life spans :TWITCHY:) I love my vets, here and in CA, but they both have some techs that drive me nuts, so I do know what you are talking about. When Mojo had her last procedure, I had to pinch my hubby, I thought that he was going to go off on the tech who brought her out. We had taken her carrier in(hard plastic) and he just tossed her in. Pointless to say anything to him, but I had a word with his boss/vet, and we've seen that tech twice since then and he's just the sweetest thing, sort of like Colby right now, like he's missing the same thing. You do have to speak up, and I'm curious to hear how your vet responds, that's what really matters. My vets have pulled me out of a few sticky situations, so I wouldn't trade them, but I certainly would fire a number of their techs!

A good ending to an interesting story! +WUBCLUB+ He's currently outside romping in the partially sunny weather with the neighbor's kids.

I'm glad that little fellow is on the mend and romping and playing once more, MrsGrace. I know he's happy to feel better once again. I've read that do not administer any vaccine two weeks before or right after any kind of surgery....something to do with their immune system being surpressed by the anesthetics rendering them not as healthy as they normally would be...don't know for sure but, I'm positive I've read that.

Good info to have! Thankfully he was 2 weeks and 3 days past his surgery and so far seems fine!

In fact... he gets to meet a lady corgi this evening named "Serenity" or "Sera" for short. (pun intended! :TWITCHY:) We'll see how they do together. She's an older woman, probably in her 2's or 3's... mayhap this would make for another fun thread! *scrambles off to start a new topic*

I'd be sure to be a constant chaperon since those older women could teach him the ropes and have him develop some bad habits on a dog whisperer could treat!!
