I came home from work shortly after 4:00 today - my usual time. I smelled something a little funny... not terribly rank, but funny. Looked down at Mac's crate as he gave a desperate WHIIINNNE....and realized that he'd had an accident ALL over the crate. Sorry to be blunt, but poop was everywhere - on the crate, his bed, his blankie, his dental dinosaur, and of course himself. He was squished all the way over to one side of his crate to be as far away from the mess as possible...but certainly that didn't work.

Rushed him into the kitchen, threw the bed and blankie into the wash, and took Mac for a walk...diarrhea, of course. Came back inside, pit him back in the kitchen, scrubbed the crate down good with soap and Lysol and Nature's Miracle, then took him out again...he seemed to feel better (didn't have to go) and actually wound up chasing after some bugs, so I took him home and plopped him right into a bath. (Luckily, at this point Col finally was getting home.)

Mac has since been bathed, and we just let him out of his crate as he's mostly dry. Work for school is being delayed and dinner is just being ordered in as we're now doing a thorough clean of the whole house - vacuuming the carpet to get any odor in there out, scrubbing down the whole bathroom, scrubbing down the whole kitchen.

My thought is that, like Sadie... he picked something up outside. Either that or he's getting sensitive to dairy - I've been giving him yogurt for his ears and last night at puppy class the treat of choice was cheese. It's already past his dinnertime, so I'm thinking that when he gets REALLY desperate I'll give him just a half cup of food and see how he does. Col is going to stop home for lunch tomorrow and I'll leave school early if I can. (luckily my prep periods are 7th and 8th!)

Any thoughts? I was going to call today to make Mac's "tutoring" appointment, but I think I'll wait tomorrow and combine it with a little consultation just to make sure we're doing everything right.

How long has he been eating the yoghurt and what kind of cheese did you give him? He may have just found it all a little too rich for his tummy. That's how I found out the hard way that Jemma has a peanut "allergy" - I had been giving her honeynut Cheerios in training and the odd dog cookie with peanut butter. After about three episodes of the same type as poor Mac - I put it together. Sometimes we just never know - it could be something else - that's the problem with dogs.

Enjoy your take out and relax for the rest of the evening!!!

Cheese was one slice of American in teeny pieces for class; we've been doing yogurt since we taped his ears again on Sunday (they're back up!), so that's four mornings with a tablespoon of yogurt in his breakfast. I'll lay off, of course... either way, for now Mac is back to his old self - he is alternately bumping mine and Colin's legs with his nose for pets, then running into the living room to attack his stuffed cow, then back in here for more pets...

Oh boy Heather. I feel for you!!

Had the same thing happen with Colby a few months ago. Woke up one morning at an ungodly hour to whining, went in and same situation. Everywhere. Poor guy was just miserable...

I did the same thing you did. Washed him, crate, vacuum & mopped the area etc. (opened all the windows too!) and just took him out more frequently for potty breaks until it seemed to pass.

It sucks and it's rough, but dogs sometimes just get in to something. (or as you said, maybe it's the cheese AND yogurt combined?) And they have these episodes. If he's still perky, no fever and acting okay other than the weird explosive poos... he's probably fine. Glad you are checking with your Vet though!

Let us know how he's doing and what the vet says! Sending you get well soon vibes!! +WUBCLUB+

Glad he's feeling better. Mac's been on yogurt since he was weaned.

Another thought on Mac is with him teething and the molars coming in, that could be upsetting and stressing out his tummy. The cheese might have been too much for him last night, in a couple of weeks probably won't bother him.

Bruin is going through lazy ear now too, so far his tummy has been okay. Now BJ, his ears are still up strong, but he did have a diarrhea blow out last week.

Debbie, empathizing with your nail biting angst over ears right now

Haven't thought of that, but you just may be right! I just read your response to my mom, who (not so fondly) remembered my own teething-induced tummy upsets as a baby. Wise Aunt Debbiemom comes through again :)

Silly me actually left one of those draft stoppers against the outside door one day last year. And in the dog's area where they get gated while I am at work.

I came home. saw they had ripped the thing apart.

It was filled with these tiny beads, I will assume plastic. YES!!! VERY CARELESS OF ME!!!!

Well I suspect they swollowed some of those beads. There was poop and pee and vomit from one end of the dining room to the other. And no way did one dog make it.... it looked like 10 dogs had been sick.

Of course by the time I am home my two hoodlums are jumping and feeling great.

It is by sheer dunm luck I have not had either in for some kind of stomache surgery.

Okay you all made me feel grateful it was nothing more today than poop and pee in the house for the first time in 2 weeks. It was an ignoring Chester afternoon with the homework load and Chester let us know about that!

A whole slice of cheese is a LOT even if broken up into small bits. Chester gets a maximum of a 1/2 inch cube.

Now tonight we are being gassed out because Chester consumed 1/4 a softer nylabone. It worked for his need of removing the stubborn puppy tooth, but oh my the smells. I better go and give him lots of attention.

Stink, er, Link can't handle cheese. He just LOVES it - the stinkier the better. But he gets KILLER GAS from just a bit, and the poops from more than just a bit.

Just say NO to cheese. Or, friends don't let friend's dogs eat cheese.

Poor Mac. Hope he is feeling better today.

With Jackie's sensitive stomach, I have been through this many times before. And now I always keep rice and chicken in the house for emergencies. When her tummy is upset, she gets only rice & boiled chicken for a day or two, then I start mixing kibble back in. It's usually due to something she picked up outside, or something new that her walker gave her. If his tummy is still upset today, try the rice & chicken diet. It will help. As long as he's still "himself", it's probably nothing to worry about.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you! +WUBCLUB+

We're back to 100% today! Mac is currently trying to invent a new way to sneak into the bedroom laundry basket to steal my underwear ;)

Glad Mac is back 100%. Chester is a stinker so we decided tonight, barely breathing, no cheese. My son has to eat the cheese stick after school snack at the table. Course one never knows if it is the incense cedar seeds on the ground or other snacks that are too plentiful here this time of year. Chester enjoyed the extra yogurt. Maybe I'll pick up some kefir to help the gas problem.

Heather - I'm so sorry that I didn't see this until tonight! I'm so glad that his was only a 12 hour illness too...it's so hard when our sweet corgis are sick! Sadie is totally back to full speed today, and I'm sure that Mac will be by tomorrow as well - good luck, and give him a tummy rub from me!
