View Full Version : Sadie's sick!!

Sadie has thrown up at least four times in the past 30 minutes! This is a dog who has never had so much as a hiccup - even through the pregnancy and the puppies. Her tummy is soft, no bowel involvement that I am aware of. She ate her entire dinner tonight (about 4 hours ago) and then went outside to play for a while. She came in about an hour and a half ago, and has thrown up several times as evidenced by the places throughout the house. I only saw her the last time - that time it was mostly bile.

I'm panicking! This is so unlike her. She's panting a bit - it's quite hot outside and she just came in a little while ago, but other than that there is nothing out of the ordinary. What do I do now?

I've had dogs with sensitive digestive tracts before - we always went straight to the rice and water for Maddy when she got sick. But this is so out of character for Sadie that I am really worried. Of course it is 8:45 at night right now.

Any advice????

Can you check her gum color and/or also take her temperature? (Maybe you've taken her temperature before, while she was pregnant.) Mac's trainer gave some good advice the other week; two of three symptoms (vomiting, pale/red gums, fever) merits a trip to the vet.

Either way, if she doesn't calm down by tomorrow morning I'd call anyway. I wouldn't feed her breakfast tomorrow...just give water. Hopefully she can keep that down...if she can, and she seems to feel better, then give her dinner.

Does anyone concur? I'm certainly no expert!!

No I am not an expert either, but would say do not feed her anything more this evening. A twenty four hour fast was recommended for Duchess when she was having a bit of stomach trouble.

Gums are fine - no tummy tenderness - she's alert but not exactly perky. She went out with me for a short walk and seemed fine, but I'm still really worried.

I don't like this!

Miss Gambler has a very sensitive tummy, and has thrown up her food many times. Did Sadie throw up her dinner? Maybe it didn't agree with her. Miss Gambler has had the bile throw up many times as well, that would generally mean that their tummy is empty, sounds like Sadie threw up all her dinner. If she was outside immediately prior, she very well may have eaten something that she shouldn't have. Just watch her and make sure that she stays hydrated, but no food. Call the vet in the morning, but he will probably tell you that if she isn't still throwing up, and if she isn't sick in any other way, to just keep her calm. As for her not feeling perky, you wouldn't either if you had been throwing up like that, and with an empty stomach, she really doesn't have any energy, and she will probably be pouting for food. I don't know if I would be walking her either, just let her relax. I'll be thinking about you and sending out vibes until you advise further.

I hope Sadie is feeling better.

Just an idea (from lots of experience) - you said Sadie had gone outside to play. Could she have eaten something while she was out there? It sounds like something doesn't agree with her tummy and it needs to come out. My dogs will gobble up anything that could possibly be related to food, and they do it fast. We get lots of sick tummies here this time of year (harvest). Even if you don't have any fruit/vegetable plans yourself, a squirrel could have dropped something in your yard.

Delilah did this about 3 weeks ago. I really did not want to go to work and leave her that day. She didn't have a bowel movement either. Cheryl and I skipped her morning meal and at dinner time we did the canned dog food (she could tell you what it was she had) with pumpkin. She seemed to be better the next day. And was definately better the day after that. Never did figure out what caused it!

Sadie seemed herself this morning - energetic, perky, and HUNGRY! I gave her a scrambled egg white and some water - she ate that appreciatively. She was fine when i got home from school just now, so I think that the worst has passed.

We've had lots of dogs with sensitive digestive tracts before...not fun! "NO:": But Sadie had never shown any adverse reactions to anything at all, so this threw me for a loop.

She'll get a very small portion of dinner tonight with water, and then we'll be back to normal if all is well. Keep your fingers crossed!!

Thanks for all of the help and wishes!

It always seems so scary when they do something like this. Unless they continue throwing up, and dry heaving or throwing up bile, their bodies are pretty good at getting the offending item out quickly. As long as she is perky, eating and drinking, she will probably be fine.

My two seem to have cast iron stomaches. So when they throw up (very rare) it scares me.

Tuck was maybe 5 months old and I came home one very hot day ( no airconditioning in the house) and he had thrown up and was throwing up bile. I made ice cube slushies and tried to get him to keep the fluid down. He did, fell asleep with both of us on the floor, and was fine when he woke up.

To this day I suspect it was the heat.

The heat may have had something to do with yesterday's event as well, although you'd think that any living being who has spent two years in Texas would be acclimated! But...it is very humid and hot here right now, and Sadie did go out to play immediately after eating dinner. She may have simply gotten over heated. They ate much earlier than usual last night because I had to go out, so their after-dinner romp was in the hot part of the late afternoon.

I'm going to chalk it up to that if all is well tonight!

YIKES!!!! That's a combination that can potentially cause one to bloat. Please be careful.

The so calif cardi newsletter printed an article that a miniature pincher got bloat from ice water. The owner put a handful of ice in the dog's water. The owner said he had done the ice water for 15 years an no problem. The Vet said the coldness caused the stomach muscles to spasm and imitate bloat. He said the ideal thing is to put cool wash clothes on the groin area and give regular temperature water. Somehow, I just visualized a dog running in and laying on its back with the legs spread. Chester sat in front of a fan at times.

I will continue to give one ice cube as Chester doesn't inhale it and it is great for the teeth.
