I tried a couple drops in Chester before we left for our walking my son to school. When Erec left us to go into school, Chester only cried once and was able to go through the parking lot better.
The following day I forgot to give the remedy and he was the usual hysterical crying that Erec "left" him.
Today Chester got a large squirt instead of a couple drops, it slipped. Well he was so mellow he didn't even cry. Only had one sit down in the parking lot.
Now to remember to give it before his nail trimming because that was a nightmare yesterday. His eyes almost looked like a seizure. I was speakless and Chester was fine afterwards. I'll give it also when he goes to the Vet.
That's weird, I just today took a bottle out of my purse that was in there since our car trip to get Link in Cleveland last spring. I never thought to use it on the dogs myself. Will have to remember...

When Chester gets neutered I'll give it to him, and try to remember to take it myself for the worry wart mom.

What is this Rescue Remedy that it can have such a calming effect? Is it a narcotic? I would not hesitate to use something to calm Duchess at times but if she were a young dog, there may be a concern as to long term effects of using a drug.

I thought Rescue Remedy was a homeopathy remedy in liquid form. I am wrong: Flower essences are herbal infusions or decoctions, made from the flowering part of the plant, which uniquely address emotional and mental aspects of wellness. The first 38 flower remedies were formulated by a British physician, Dr. Edward Bach, in the 1930's, although new remedies from other plant species are now available. Flower essences are energetic imprints of the life force of plants which interact with these subtle bodies of the human being, and evoke specific qualities within us. Rescue remedy is a combination of flower essences.
My experience with the floral remedies is that they are mood enhancers instead of replacement for medications like homeopathy is. Flower or floral essences are labeled by Dr. Bach's original methods, and labeled as herbal dietary supplements. Flower essences contain only minute traces of actual physical substance; they are primarily vibrational in nature, as are homeopathic remedies.
Where as Homeopathy:A system for treating disease based on the administration of minute doses of a drug that in massive amounts produces symptoms in healthy individuals similar to those of the disease itself.
The American AMA considers homeopathy a placebo. I discovered though if you have an AMA doctor originally from India or U.K. they get made if you don't tell them you are on remedies! I had a fatty cyst disappear when I was under a U.K. homeopath's care - meaning they give doses that are high 1M is 1 part to 1 million part. It is really opposite to what we would think. The more diluted the ingredient, the more strength of the essence. I've seen that for general care 30X is recommended for babies/children and dogs.
It is very hard to treat a pet because they can't verbally tell us what are their symptoms. Are they feeling better in cold vs warm room for example. There are a handful that can't be given together because they cancel out each others effect. So combinations are very handy for pets. You are bound to hit on one that will work for the dog.
To answer your concern Jane, the flower essence contains minute substance of the herb and thus safe to give even babies. Four drops is the recommended amount and I may start putting it in Chester's water which is the desired method. They say to do it for a month daily and then re-evaluate. Many of us carry rescue remedy in our car for anxiety of an accident. I stopped because I never remembered it.
On our past dog, when she sniffed a foxtail up her nose, the rescue remedy slowed down her violent sniffing as we rushed her to the Vet.
For myself, I find I needed Elm and Walnut when we first moved here. When I have a life change, the essences help me relax and trust my decisions. I do hope I remember this when I go back to work!
There are many helpful websites that can explain this better than I. I turned to homeopathy and floral essences when I had my son and my best friend was from England and her mom is a homeopath. Homeopaths in the US can charge an outrageous amount which is why I had not researched it until I gave birth. Now with the internet, there is websites like abchomeopathy.com that help you figure out what remedy to use based on your symptoms. There is a booklet explaining each flower essence that I refer to. Many homeopaths prescribe remedies to work with a medical treatment. For example we got a remedy to reduce any reaction to vaccinations as my husband was in the was getting a vaccination that had questionable substances included in with the vital substance. It is fascinating, but the best is to have good health and not need homeopathy. That isn't possible regarding flower essences because of our hectic lives.
Sorry to be so :CHATTERBOX: I just like health products that have no side effects.

Rescue Remedy is probably safe. Studies have also been done that show it is no more effective than a placebo. You can use it, it won't hurt your dog, and the fact that it makes you feel better may even calm him.
