Sassy has been very "anti-social" since her spay on Wednesday. It's been 5 days and she's not acting like she's in much pain, but she keeps hiding in the
guest bedroom instead of laying around near us. Should I be concerned?

Also, she has a sort of coughing type sound (but not barky) that she is doing since she's gotten home. I once thought it was kennel cough, but it's only when she's excited, like right when we come home. What do you think about that?

I have no insight for you but will be watching the thread to learn more.

I sure hope it is nothing serious, Poor baby!

I think it's more than worth a phone call to the vet's to ask them these same questions. It could be that Sassy is simply more comfortable in the other room right now - and it's quieter - who knows? Does she engage in play and other social activities with you and your family?

I'd definitely ask the vet about the cough. Does she have to go back to get stitches removed or are they disolving stitches? You could ask if you are going back in the next few days.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

it could very well be kennel cough- but also her throat could be irritated from the tube they use to help them breathe while they are put under. It's worth asking about- especially if she is still acting weird- they normally bounce back pretty quickly!

Hope poor Sassy feels better soon!

My only thought on the cough sound if it isn't a cough, could it be her trying to bark? Have you heard her bark since being home? The reason why this popped in to my head, was our past dog had barked probably continuously for 2 days at the Vet/boarder at my in-laws and her bark was a pathetic squack sound or airy when we got her home.

Is she eating? Is she drinking? Are her bowel/bladder habits normal?

Dogs do not often act like they're in pain, even when they are. She might be in pain. I think it might be worth a visit to have the vet check her out and make sure every thing is healing the way it should be.

And could be she's just a bit scared. Maybe she's never been to the vet before?

Ok, that could be irritation of her throat from the tube used to give her the anesthetic. If you have the vet look her over have him check her throat.

Or it could be reverse sneezing.

Also, kennel cough, my Golden had that years ago, and he pretty much only coughed when he would get excited or try to bark.

Any news on how Sassy is doing?

I have to admit to being a bit worried. When your dog is not acting normal, it is very worrisome. Even if normal borders on obnoxious (Tucker.... Lulu....), you hate the thought of them being in pain or scared or if indeed, kennel cough, seriously ill.

Looking foreward to hearing good news and sending sassy well wishes!

well, I ran her back to the vet the other day. We really didn't get too many answers, but decided to treat for kennel cough anyway, and they gave me something like a cough suppresant. Seems to be working pretty well.

She's still a bit antisocial, but the vet suggested that because she'd JUST come out of heat and then they did a total removal of the hormones (not just a tubal) that she may honestly be a bit depressed. She suggested closing off all the rooms possible that Sassy was "hiding" in and trying to keep her with us. She's still not as outgoing and friendly as before, but I think she's coming around a bit.

I have a horrible time getting her to come to me (or anyone else). I get really frustrated when she won't come. I have to drag her from under beds and that kind of thing. I think maybe she's a bit mad at me.

And no, she's never been to a vet before that I know of. So I'm sure that had something to do with it as well.

I hope it helps. And yes, they use cough syrup w/a suppresant for dogs with kennel cough. My dog years ago took Robetussin.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "tubal". A dogs uterus is Y shaped and when they spay a dog they take the entire uterus and ovaries. That's standard proceedure. They can not do a "tubal" on a dog. It would be cost prohibitative.

I think she just needs some time. Give her some extra love and understanding.

Block her from getting into areas where you can't get to her easily. (Like under the bed.) And try using a really tasty treat to get her to come.
