My corgi started this as a puppy and still does it. It was in a panic the first time it happened, now I just pull her over and start giving her a throat massage. I know it must annoy her when it happens.
For those that have no idea what I'm talking about, here is a good description of the issue. (http://www.paw-rescue.org/PAW/PETTIPS/DogTip_ReverseSneezing.html)
Anyone else have this problem? How do you get it to end quickly? Has your vet offered any advice?

Hmmm, interesting. I never knew there was an actual name for this condition! Trevor has done this a few times, but he always stops very quickly, on his own. We used to have an Alaskan Eskimo that did this quite frequently, especially as he got older. It always freaked me out when he started it. Wish I had know then about the throat massage!

I'd give Pepper a drop of Rescue Remedy. Turns out just the swallowing of it helped! Thanks for the info.

Peanut, my chihuahua, has this problem anytime he gets excited. Like my older daughter coming home from work will trigger an episode or being scolded when he is caught doing something wrong (like wetting the pillow on my bed:ARG: ).
I put him in his box if it is a severe episode, so that he will calm down. If it is a minor one, I have tried the rubbing the throat thing and have done the blocking the nasal passages. The best thing I have found is to distract the dog from whatever activity started the episode.

weird as this sounds, press on his tongue...really...my friends little Jack Russell does this all the time- especially when she is excited- Sarah's vet actually is the one who told her about it...It probably works because it makes them swallow...

Yes, I've had dogs that do this. It's pretty common in corgis and in some other breeds. (Known as whippet wheezes in whippets.)
What's worked best for me is to blow a quick puff of air into the nose.
Sometimes just holding the nose closed so they have to take a breath through the mouth works. Anything that changes the breathing seems to work.

Swallowing is what my vet told me was key to getting one to stop. I've found just squirting water into the mouth will do the trick. Other methods, covering the nose to make them breathe through the mouth, blowing in the nose like Peggy said, rubbing the throat sometimes helps.
